Intradermal and subcutaneous calcinosis (Fig. 24.9) develops mainly, but not exclusively, in those with limited disease. Calcinosis occurs more frequently at the fingerpads and periarticular areas but can affect other districts. It consists of hydroxyapatite deposits which range from small to large lesions and can complicate with crystal-induced inflammation and/or skin ulceration with subsequent extrusion of white grains or toothpaste-like material.
